The screen shot above from FOX News on July 31, 2020 is a typical report on all cable TV shows (and other media) that claims, in this case, a total count of over 150,000 deaths from COVID-19. Are these reported death counts true or false?
FALSE: Though 152,082 deaths is less than 1/20th of one percent of the US population, the actual death count is much, much lower!
How do we know this? Because the World Health Organization (WHO) sent detailed instructions to the US government’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which in turn through their National Vital Statistics System (NVSS) sent the exact same wording to all state coroners and anyone else who fills in medical cause-of-death certificates, telling them they “should” record that the death was due to COVID-19 “where the disease caused, or is assumed to have caused, or contributed to death.” (See page 3 of WHO certifying guidelines, NVSS “Guidance …” (Alert No. 1), and NVSS “COVID-19 Alert No. 2”, by clicking the links below.)
The WHO instructions show examples of how to fill in “COVID-19” as the “underlying cause” of death in Part 1 of the death certificate, even when the “other significant conditions contributing to death” listed in Part 2 are: 5 years of coronary artery disease, 14 years of diabetes, 8 years of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or 10 years of cerebral palsy. This means that people who died with COVID-19 or are only assumed to have died with COVID-19, or in which COVID-19 may have only contributed to their death, are being certified to have died from COVID-19. It also means that the true underlying cause of death is often listed merely as contributing to the death.
The intention of the CDC, if not of the WHO, is obviously to show as many deaths from COVID-19 as possible, because one of the statements made in the CDC guidelines is: “the rules for coding and selection of the underlying cause of death are expected to result in COVID-19 being the underlying cause more often than not.” (See NVSS “COVID-19 Alert No. 2” below.)
